Deep Research

AI can be a powerful tool for deep research, helping you explore complex topics more efficiently than traditional search methods alone. When used thoughtfully, AI can support stronger analysis, better informed decision making and more effective planning.

Standard Search vs. Deep Research

Standard search retrieves quick facts via keywords. Deep research connects information from multiple sources to reveal patterns and context. AI-assisted research goes further by comparing sources, summarizing key ideas and extracting insights from complex topics. This is ideal for exploratory questions and strategic planning, where a broader understanding is essential.

Accessing Deep Research Tools

Access deep research directly within the main chat area of most AI platforms. Look for a 'Research' or 'Deep Research' mode in the model selector or tools menu (+ icon) before submitting your prompt. You can also trigger it by uploading documents to provide specific context. For exact locations, check your platform's specific layout.

Approaching Deep Research

  • Clearly define your research goal and the type of output you need
  • Provide context about your audience and constraints (this helps the AI deliver more relevant insights)
  • For complex research, consider creating a custom AI assistant
  • Review the output, note what is missing or unclear and refine follow up questions

Evaluate and Use AI-generated Research

AI-generated research should be used as a starting point, not a final source.

  • Review outputs and verify key facts
  • Assess whether information aligns with SDSU standards
  • Integrate AI-supported insights into your own analysis rather than relying on them verbatim

This approach helps ensure accuracy and responsible use while still benefiting from the efficiency AI can provide.

Approved AI Tools for SDSU

Several AI platforms support deep research workflows. Tools that can support deep research include ChatGPT, Google’s NotebookLM, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, each of which can help review information and assist with analysis when used thoughtfully.

Sample Deep Research Prompts

These prompts are intentionally broad and require follow-up questions to refine results.

  • “Research current trends in higher education with a focus on how universities are addressing student wellness, belonging and support in their messaging.”
  • “Analyze how similarly sized public universities structure their crisis communication teams and workflows. Highlight patterns, strengths and potential gaps.”
  • “Identify emerging expectations among Gen Z students related to transparency, authenticity and trust in university marketing and institutional communications.”
  • “Examine current trends in how prospective students engage with university content and summarize implications for communications and outreach.”
  • Tip: Deep research is most effective when prompts include relevant contexts, such as your audience, and are refined over multiple steps. Always review outputs critically and verify key information using trusted sources.

Security and Integrity

When using AI for deep research, it’s essential to protect sensitive information by avoiding entering confidential data or personally identifying information. Always verify AI-generated content against trusted sources before using it in reports or decision-making.
